Fix Edge/Chrome Crash issue Which is "STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN" Error, All Pages Failing to Open (Including Settings)
When I opened the portable Edge browser (Version 127) that I had just set up not long ago today, the issue shown in the image below suddenly occurred:
Multiple browser extensions reported errors with malfunction prompts. At the same time, all web pages failed to open properly—even all of Edge’s settings pages couldn’t be accessed, and they all showed errors!!😨
I won’t go into detail about how I searched for and tested various solutions; let’s jump straight to the final fix 👊
Press the WIN + S keys on your keyboard, search for Exploit Protection, and open the Windows Security Center settings.
Next, find Program settings » Add program to customize » Add by program name, then enter msedge.exe (if Chrome is crashing, enter chrome.exe instead).
In the window that pops up next, scroll down to find Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. Check the boxes for "Override system settings", "On", and "Audit only", then click Apply.
Then, locate the shortcut for your Edge browser. Right-click it » Properties » Compatibility » Change settings for all users » Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" » Select Windows 8, and finally click OK step by step.
Launch Edge again, and the problem should be resolved.
The only downside is that a white bar may appear at the top of the browser. It’s not very visible in screenshots, but it’s quite noticeable when you see it in person. However, overall, the impact is not significant—you’ll probably get used to it and ignore it after using the browser for a while 😂
The above method is from an official Microsoft Community staff member’s response:
However, the staff member stated that the specific reason for Edge’s crashes is unknown—
